The Seaside Classic

Withernsea Sands is the kind of holiday park people book when they want the full traditional seaside experience — donkey rides, 99 flakes, the pier, and a promenade that feels like it hasn't changed since 1976. The park is right on the seafront, walking distance from the town's surprisingly good fish and chip shops. It's proper bucket-and-spade territory. Families with young children love it here, which means a particular kind of key emergency we see a lot: the toddler-accidentally-locked-in-the-car scenario.

When a child — or a dog — gets locked in a car on a summer day, you can't wait for the AA to arrive "sometime within the hour." The interior of a car in direct sun can hit 40°C in 20 minutes. We treat these as absolute emergencies and we're on the road within 60 seconds of the call. The drive is longer than our local Scarborough calls — Withernsea is south of Hornsea — but we make it work.

The VW Passat, the Toddler, and the 28-Degree Day

August bank holiday. A family from Rotherham were packing the VW Passat to go to the beach when the mum put the key on the driver's seat, shut the door, and walked round to strap their 2-year-old into the rear child seat. The Passat auto-locked — a known VW quirk when the key is on the seat and the door closes. The key was on the front seat, the toddler was in the back, the doors were locked, and it was 28 degrees with direct sun on the car. The mum was in tears. The park staff called us. We were already on the road — a previous call near Brid had us halfway there. We arrived 35 minutes later and had the Passat open in under 90 seconds. The toddler was hot but fine — more upset about the commotion than anything. The mum gave us a hug. Those calls stick with you.

The Toyota Yaris and the Promenade Key Drop

A young couple had driven up from Leicester for a long weekend. On their last evening they walked the Withernsea promenade, got ice creams, and sat on a bench watching the sea. She hung her handbag on the armrest of the bench — the Toyota Yaris key was in the outside pocket. When they stood up, the bag swung, the key flew out of the pocket, and it landed perfectly in the gap between two promenade decking planks. Below the planks was about a metre of darkness before the sea wall dropped another four metres onto the beach. The key was gone. A park maintenance man tried to lift a plank but they were bolted down. We came out, programmed a new Yaris key at the car park, and they left the next morning. The original key is still under the Withernsea promenade — a seagull probably stands on it.
