The Flamborough Headland Park

Thornwick Bay is Haven's most northerly Yorkshire park, perched on the Flamborough headland just north of Bridlington. It's a short walk from the famous Flamborough cliffs, the lighthouse, and the sea caves that draw kayakers and coastal explorers from across the country. The puffin colonies at Bempton Cliffs are a few miles up the coast. It's wilder and more rugged than the parks further south — the kind of place people come for walking rather than waterslides.

The rugged landscape is part of the appeal — and part of the reason we get called here. Keys dropped on rocky coastal paths. Keys lost while clambering over tide pools. Keys that have slipped out of pockets while bending down to photograph puffins. The terrain makes finding a dropped key nearly impossible — and the nearest dealer might as well be on the moon. We make the drive from Scarborough in about 30 minutes, which is faster than any alternative a holidaymaker at Thornwick Bay is going to find.

The Toyota RAV4 and the Rock Pool

A couple from York were exploring the rock pools at low tide near the Flamborough sea caves. She was holding the Toyota RAV4 key — his pockets were full of shells their daughter had collected — and as she crouched to point out a crab, the key slipped from her hand into a deep rock pool. Salt water and car keys are a terrible combination. The key shorted instantly. We drove out to Thornwick Bay, opened the RAV4, and programmed a new smart key at the park's main car park. The daughter kept the crab. The key was a write-off.

The Citroën C4 Picasso and the Puffin Photo

A family from Sheffield drove up to Bempton Cliffs for the puffins — one of Yorkshire's great wildlife experiences. Dad was using his phone to photograph puffins, but had the Citroën C4 Picasso key in the same hand. In the excitement of a particularly close puffin, the key went over the cliff edge. It fell 200 feet to the beach below — inaccessible and certainly not functional. We were at Thornwick Bay within 35 minutes, where the family were staying. New C4 Picasso key programmed at the caravan. The puffin photo was excellent, they said. Worth it? Debatable.

Car Keys at Thornwick Bay — What Goes Wrong & How We Sort It

Thornwick Bay sits in one of the most dramatic stretches of Yorkshire coastline, and the same rugged environment that makes it such a brilliant place to stay also makes it a magnet for lost-key incidents. We've worked on the cliffs, the rock pools, the clifftop paths, the sea cave beaches, and the caravan park itself — every kind of key loss scenario you can imagine, plus a few you wouldn't.

The most common call-outs at Thornwick Bay are holidaymakers who've locked their keys in the car while packing for the drive home, families who've lost a key somewhere on the coastal walk, and visitors who've dropped a key into a rock pool or off a cliff edge while sightseeing. The remote headland location — Flamborough is one of the further points in our 25-mile operating radius — means a recovery truck to a main dealer would take most of a day and cost a small fortune. We make the drive from Scarborough in roughly 30 minutes along the A165 and the minor roads down to the headland.

How Long Does It Take to Get a New Car Key at Thornwick Bay?

Most replacement key jobs at Thornwick Bay take between 45 minutes and an hour from our arrival. We cut the blade, programme the transponder chip, and sync the remote fob to the vehicle — all on site, in the car park outside your caravan or at your holiday home. Lockout jobs are even faster, usually 15 to 30 minutes from arrival. We always give you a precise ETA when you call 01723 817140, so you'll know exactly when to expect us and you can get on with your holiday rather than waiting around.

What If I've Lost the Only Key to My Car at Thornwick Bay?

All-keys-lost situations are our bread and butter. We don't need a spare to programme a new key — we read the immobiliser through the OBD port using your vehicle's VIN, cut a fresh blade to factory spec, programme a new transponder chip matched to your car, and (where applicable) sync the remote fob to the central locking system. You'll need your V5C logbook and a photo ID to prove ownership, and that's it. Most all-keys-lost jobs at Thornwick Bay are completed in under 90 minutes from our arrival.

Holiday-Maker Lockouts — A Thornwick Bay Speciality

Locking your keys in the car while packing the boot is one of those mishaps that happens to almost everyone at some point. It's particularly common at caravan parks because people often load up the boot, slam it shut, and only then realise the keys are still inside. We open vehicles non-destructively — your door, lock, paintwork, and window seals all stay intact. Most unlocks are done in under 20 minutes at Thornwick Bay, and the price is the same flat rate as anywhere else in our coverage area.
