The Flamborough Headland Park

Thornwick Bay is Haven's most northerly Yorkshire park, perched on the Flamborough headland just north of Bridlington. It's a short walk from the famous Flamborough cliffs, the lighthouse, and the sea caves that draw kayakers and coastal explorers from across the country. The puffin colonies at Bempton Cliffs are a few miles up the coast. It's wilder and more rugged than the parks further south — the kind of place people come for walking rather than waterslides.

The rugged landscape is part of the appeal — and part of the reason we get called here. Keys dropped on rocky coastal paths. Keys lost while clambering over tide pools. Keys that have slipped out of pockets while bending down to photograph puffins. The terrain makes finding a dropped key nearly impossible — and the nearest dealer might as well be on the moon. We make the drive from Scarborough in about 30 minutes, which is faster than any alternative a holidaymaker at Thornwick Bay is going to find.

The Toyota RAV4 and the Rock Pool

A couple from York were exploring the rock pools at low tide near the Flamborough sea caves. She was holding the Toyota RAV4 key — his pockets were full of shells their daughter had collected — and as she crouched to point out a crab, the key slipped from her hand into a deep rock pool. Salt water and car keys are a terrible combination. The key shorted instantly. We drove out to Thornwick Bay, opened the RAV4, and programmed a new smart key at the park's main car park. The daughter kept the crab. The key was a write-off.

The Citroën C4 Picasso and the Puffin Photo

A family from Sheffield drove up to Bempton Cliffs for the puffins — one of Yorkshire's great wildlife experiences. Dad was using his phone to photograph puffins, but had the Citroën C4 Picasso key in the same hand. In the excitement of a particularly close puffin, the key went over the cliff edge. It fell 200 feet to the beach below — inaccessible and certainly not functional. We were at Thornwick Bay within 35 minutes, where the family were staying. New C4 Picasso key programmed at the caravan. The puffin photo was excellent, they said. Worth it? Debatable.
