Why Get Your VIN Before Calling?

Get the Right Key First Time

Different trim levels of the same model use different keys. Your VIN ensures we bring the exact right key.

Avoid Main Dealer Delays

Dealers often have 1-2 week lead times. We arrive with your VIN pre-checked — key cut and programmed on the spot.

Transponder Compatibility

Modern keys need the right transponder chip. Your VIN tells us the exact immobiliser system fitted to your car.

Save £200–400 vs Dealers

With your VIN ready, we provide a fixed quote upfront — no surprises, 12-month guarantee, same-day service.

What is a VIN and Why Does It Matter?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every car, van and motorcycle built since 1981. It acts as the vehicle's fingerprint — no two vehicles on the road share the same VIN. The VIN reveals exactly which car you have, including the manufacturer, model year, engine type, body style, factory options, and even the plant where it was assembled.

In the UK, most people know their vehicle by its registration plate (the number plate on the front and rear). The number plate is the DVLA's way of identifying your vehicle, but it doesn't tell you everything you need to know about it. The VIN goes much deeper. While the number plate tells you which car is yours, the VIN tells you everything about your car.

For a locksmith, the VIN is the most important piece of information when ordering a replacement car key. Modern car keys are not universal — each key has to be cut to match the specific lock wafers, then programmed to talk to the immobiliser system in your exact vehicle. Two identical Ford Focus models, one from 2018 and one from 2020, can use completely different keys. Even the same model year can have different keys depending on the trim level (entry-level Zetec versus top-of-the-range Titanium, for example).

How Our Free Reg2VIN Lookup Works

Type in your UK registration number above and we'll instantly pull the full DVLA vehicle record. Our tool uses the same data the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency uses, so you can trust the results. Within seconds you'll get back your 17-character VIN along with the make, model, year of registration, engine size, fuel type, body style, colour, transmission, number of seats, and immobiliser information.

Once you have your VIN, you can either write it down, screenshot it, or copy it directly from our results page using the copy button next to the VIN display. When you then call us or request a quote, having the VIN ready means we can give you an accurate fixed price immediately — no need for us to call you back once we've looked it up, and no need for you to describe your car over the phone (which often leads to mistakes and wrong keys being ordered).

When You'll Need Your VIN

The most common reason our customers in Scarborough, Filey, Whitby, Pickering and across North Yorkshire need their VIN is for a replacement car key. If you've lost your only key, had it stolen, or the key has simply worn out or broken, a new key needs to be both physically cut and electronically programmed to your specific vehicle. Without the VIN, the locksmith has no way of knowing which key blank to use or which transponder chip to programme.

You'll also need your VIN when buying a second-hand car — the VIN on the V5C logbook should match the VIN stamped on the car itself (usually visible through the bottom of the windscreen on the dashboard). Mismatched VINs are a red flag for clocked or stolen vehicles. You can use our free tool to check that the registration number the seller has given you matches the actual DVLA record.

UK Number Plate Formats We Recognise

Our lookup tool recognises all current and historical UK registration formats, including the current format (AB12 CDE, introduced September 2001), the prefix system (A123 ABC, used 1983-2001), and the suffix system (A123 ABC, used 1963-1983). Personalised plates and cherished transfer registrations are also supported. If your vehicle was first registered before 1983, the tool may return a more limited set of data, as DVLA records from that era are less comprehensive.

Privacy and Data

We don't store your registration number, your email address, or your VIN after you close this page. The lookup is performed in real time and the results are only displayed to you in your browser. We will not contact you, share your details with third parties, or add you to any marketing lists. Your email is collected only to deliver your vehicle details — nothing more.
