Story from the Road

New Year's Day, the Van, and the Tradesman Who Couldn't Work

It was 7am on New Year's Day. The roads were empty, the sky was that pale winter grey, and most of Scarborough was still asleep. A self-employed plumber from Eastfield had a call-out booked for 8am — a burst pipe at a holiday let on the Esplanade, the kind of job that can't wait. He walked out to his Vauxhall Vivaro van, reached for his keys, and realised the only set was on the driver's seat — and the van had locked itself after he'd loaded his tools the night before.

No spare key. No dealership open on New Year's Day. No way to get to the job. His tools, his invoice book, and his diary for the week were all in the van. He called us at quarter past seven, voice tight with the kind of stress that only a tradesman who's about to let a customer down can feel. "I know it's a bank holiday," he said, "but is there any chance?"

We were on site at his Eastfield house within 15 minutes. The van was a modern Vivaro with a decent security system — not impossible, but not a five-minute job either. We used a specialist air wedge to create a gap at the top of the door frame, slipped the reach tool through, and hooked the interior handle. Twenty minutes after we arrived, the door popped open. His keys were exactly where he'd said — on the driver's seat, practically glowing under the streetlamp.

He made it to the holiday let by 7:45am. The burst pipe was fixed by 9. The guests never knew how close they came to spending New Year's Day with a flooded bathroom. He rang us later that week and booked a spare key. "I'm never going through New Year's Day like that again," he said. Neither would we. That's the kind of morning you remember.
