Common Questions & Guides
What to Do When You're Locked Out of Your Car
First — don't panic. Don't try to force the door or wedge the window open; modern cars have deadlocks that engage when the car is locked with the remote, and forcing the door can break the locking mechanism (which is more expensive to fix than a lockout). Don't call a recovery truck unless you have breakdown cover — they'll usually just call a locksmith anyway and add their markup. Call an auto locksmith directly. We use non-destructive entry tools to open your car without damage, usually within 30–60 minutes in the Scarborough area.

How Much Does a Replacement Car Key Cost?
It depends on the make, model, and year of your car — but as a guide: a basic non-remote key (older cars) starts around £85, a remote flip key for common cars like a Ford Focus or Vauxhall Corsa is typically £125–£155, and a modern proximity smart key (BMW, VW, Nissan) runs £185–£295. All of these are significantly less than main dealer prices, which routinely charge £250–£500 for the same key — plus the cost and hassle of getting your car to them.
There's no charge for a no-obligation price over the phone — just tell us your reg number and we'll give you an exact figure before we come out. Call 01723 817140.
Can You Programme a Key Without the Original?
Yes — we do it regularly. If you've lost all your keys, we can still programme a new one. The process involves reading the car's immobiliser module through the OBD (diagnostic) port, erasing the lost keys from the car's memory (so they can't be used if someone finds them — an important security step), and programming the new key to the car. This works for the vast majority of cars built after 2000, including all the common makes we see in Scarborough. The cost is higher than duplicating an existing key (typically from £185), but it's still far less than a dealer.
What Is a Transponder Key and Why Does It Matter?
A transponder key contains a tiny microchip that communicates with your car's immobiliser. When you turn the ignition (or press the start button), the car sends a signal to the key. If the chip responds with the correct code, the car starts. If the chip is missing or has the wrong code, the engine won't fire — even if the key blade turns perfectly in the ignition. This is why a cheap metal key cut at a hardware shop won't start your car: it has no transponder chip. Every key we cut and programme includes the correct transponder that's matched to your specific car.
Why Do Auto Locksmiths Charge Less Than Main Dealers?
Dealers don't specialise in keys — they order them from the manufacturer, who charges wholesale prices marked up for retail, and then charge labour on top. An independent auto locksmith uses the same quality key blanks and the same programming equipment, but without the franchise overhead, the showroom, and the corporate pricing structure. We also come to you, so you're not paying for a recovery truck or taking time off work to get to the dealer. The key you get from us is the same key — it just costs less and arrives faster.
My Key Fob Battery Is Dead — Can I Still Start My Car?
Usually, yes — but it depends on your car. Most keyless-start cars have a backup method: on many models, holding the dead fob against the start button (or a specific spot on the steering column marked with a key symbol) allows the car to read the transponder chip directly, even with no fob battery power. Check your owner's manual for the emergency start position. If that doesn't work, or if you've already tried it, call us — we can replace the fob battery and test the key on site, usually in under 5 minutes (from £25 including the battery).
How Can I Avoid Losing My Only Car Key?
The single best thing you can do — and the advice we give every customer — is get a spare key cut BEFORE you lose your only one. A spare non-remote key (which will unlock the door and start the car) costs around £85–£95 for most cars. Once you've lost all your keys, the cost jumps to £185+ because we have to erase the lost keys from the car's security system and start fresh. A spare key is the cheapest insurance policy a car owner can buy. We can cut and programme one at your home or workplace in under an hour.
