Britain's Favourite Crossover — and Its Key Problems
The Nissan Qashqai is the car you see in every other driveway in Scarborough — from the Esplanade to Newby. The original J10 (2007–2013) proved the crossover concept worked for British families. The J11 (2014–2021) made it the UK's best-selling car that wasn't a Fiesta or a Golf. The current J12 (2021 onwards) added Nissan's latest connected-car technology.
Each generation uses a different key system. The early J10 used a simple remote key with a separate transponder chip. The J11 introduced the i-Key — a proximity smart key that stays in your pocket. The J12 uses an evolved smart key system compatible with NissanConnect app-based unlocking. We carry key blanks, remotes, and i-Keys for all three generations and can programme them at your car anywhere in our 25-mile radius.
One thing we see frequently with Qashqai J11 models: the i-Key stops being recognised by the car, even with a fresh battery. This is usually a failed NATS immobiliser sync (Nissan Anti-Theft System), not a broken key. We can re-sync the system at the roadside — it takes about 20 minutes with our diagnostic kit, and you don't need a new key at all. If you do need a new key, we programme it on the spot.

Story from the Road
The Qashqai, the Puddle, and the Key That Drowned
A rainy Tuesday in Scarborough, and a young family had just returned from a soggy walk along the seafront. Dad was carrying their toddler, both soaked through, and in the fumble to get the car unlocked, his Nissan Qashqai J11 i-Key slipped out of his wet hand and landed in a deep puddle next to the car — the kind that fills the gutters along the Marine Drive after a downpour.
He fished it out within seconds, but the damage was done. The i-Key is a sealed unit, but it's not waterproof — water had already shorted the circuit board. The car didn't respond at all. He couldn't unlock it, couldn't start it, and had a wet, unhappy toddler on his hands.
He called us at 4:15pm. We were at the Marine Drive by 4:35pm. We opened the Qashqai without damage, supplied and programmed a brand-new i-Key on the spot, and had the family dry and warm inside the car within 40 minutes of his call. We also cut him an emergency blade key — the slim metal key hidden inside the i-Key housing — so if anything ever happened to the remote again, he'd still be able to unlock the driver's door manually and get to the interior. That blade key costs very little and is the most sensible insurance policy a Qashqai owner can have.
