BMW CAS, FEM, and BDC — Why BMW Keys Aren't Simple

BMW doesn't make it easy to get a replacement key — and that's intentional. Every BMW key contains a rolling-code transponder that syncs with the car's immobiliser module (CAS on earlier models, FEM or BDC on later ones). Getting this wrong can lock the car's security module entirely, which is why many auto locksmiths won't touch BMWs.

We've invested in the specialist BMW programming equipment to handle this safely. Whether it's an E90 3 Series with CAS3, an F30 with FEM, or the latest G20 with BDC, we can read the security module, prepare a new key, and programme it to the car — at the roadside, not at a dealer with a three-week wait.

BMW display keys (the ones with the little LCD screen showing fuel range and service info) are also something we can replace — though they're pricier. We stock standard remote fobs and smart keys for all common BMW chassis codes, including the 1 Series (E81/E82/E87/E88, F20/F21, F40), 3 Series (E90/E91/E92/E93, F30/F31/F34, G20/G21), 5 Series (E60/E61, F10/F11, G30/G31), and X1, X3, and X5.

Story from the Road

The BMW, the Boot, and the Only Key

A retired gentleman in Scarborough owned a beautifully kept 2014 BMW 320d — F30, Estoril Blue, his pride and joy. He'd owned it from new and it had never let him down. One Saturday afternoon he loaded shopping into the boot at the Brunswick, closed the lid, and realised with a sickening drop of the stomach that his key was in one of the shopping bags — inside the boot — which had just locked automatically.

Modern BMWs use comfort access — the car senses the key and locks/unlocks accordingly. When the key is inside the boot, the car should detect it and refuse to lock. But if the key is shielded by metal — like shopping tins, a Thermos flask, or in his case, a bag of frozen peas — the car loses the signal, assumes the key has walked away, and deadlocks. The key is now inside a locked car with the deadlocks engaged.

He called us at 2pm. We were in the Brunswick car park by 2:25pm. We opened the F30 without damage using specialist entry tools, retrieved the key from the boot, and had him on his way in under ten minutes. We also cut him a spare emergency blade key — a slim non-remote key that opens the driver's door mechanically — so if this ever happened again, he'd have a physical backup. Total cost: less than a tenth of what a BMW dealer would charge to recover and re-key the car.
