Why BMW Keys Aren't Like Other Car Keys
BMW doesn't make it easy to get a replacement key — and that's deliberate. Every BMW key contains a rolling-code transponder chip that pairs with the car's immobiliser module (called CAS on E-series models, FEM or BDC on F and G series). The pairing is one-way: the module has to be told to accept the new key, not the other way around. Get it wrong and the module locks itself out — which is why many locksmiths refuse to touch a BMW.
We carry the BMW-specific diagnostic kit needed to do this safely. We read the security module through the OBD port, generate a brand-new key, and write it into the immobiliser without disturbing anything else. The original keys keep working, the new key works, and the security module remains fully intact.
Comfort Access & Display Keys
Comfort Access is the system that unlocks the car as you walk up to it and locks it as you walk away. It uses a low-frequency antenna in the door handle to detect the key's presence. The keys themselves are more expensive than a standard remote fob, and the programming process is more involved — but it's something we do regularly.
BMW display keys (the ones with the little LCD screen showing fuel range and service info) are rarer and pricier, but we can replace them too. We stock standard remote fobs and smart keys for the common BMW chassis codes and order display keys in as needed.
Why Choose Us Over a BMW Dealer
A BMW main dealer will replace a lost key, but they'll book the car in for a week, charge £280–£500, and may want the car recovered to the dealership on a transporter. We do the same work at your car, in your driveway or workplace, on the same day, for a fraction of the price. The key we make is identical in function to a dealer-supplied key — same transponder, same remote functions, same comfort access (where fitted).
BMW Key Pricing
BMW replacement keys from £195 for a remote fob with a working original available, and from £295 for an all-keys-lost job. We come to your car across Scarborough and North Yorkshire.
BMW main dealer comparison: £280–£500 with a 1–3 week wait. We do it the same day, at your car.

Story from the Road
The 320d, the Shopping, and the Locked Boot
A retired gentleman in Scarborough had a 2014 BMW 320d F30 — Estoril Blue, his pride and joy, owned from new. Saturday afternoon, Brunswick Shopping Centre car park. He loaded the shopping into the boot, closed the lid, and realised with a sickening drop of the stomach that his key was in one of the shopping bags — inside the locked boot.
Modern BMWs use Comfort Access: the car senses the key and locks automatically. When the key is inside the boot, the car should detect it and refuse to lock. But if the key is shielded by metal — shopping tins, a Thermos flask, a bag of frozen peas — the car loses the signal, assumes the key has walked away, and deadlocks. The key is now inside a locked car with the deadlocks engaged.
He called us at 2pm. We were in the Brunswick car park by 2:25pm. We opened the F30 without damage using specialist entry tools, retrieved the key from the boot, and had him on his way in under ten minutes. We also cut him a slim non-remote emergency blade key so he'd never be in that position again.
