BMW 3 Series — All Keys Lost
at a Scarborough Event
The call came in on a busy weekend — a white BMW 3 Series, the only key lost somewhere between the car park and the event gate. The driver had turned out every pocket, retraced every step, and come up empty. The car was sat where they'd left it, doors locked, key gone. We drove to them, read the CAS module, cut a fresh blade, and programmed a new remote at the car. Day saved.

Real photo taken on the day — white BMW 3 Series on the event field, the new key held in the foreground. No stock photos, no marketing shots.
How the Job Went
The driver was at a busy Scarborough event on the field — the kind of weekend where the car park is the size of a small village. They'd come down for the day, locked the car normally, and somewhere between the gate and the food stalls the only key had slipped out of a pocket. By the time they realised, the car was locked, the key was gone, and the day was on hold.
They rang us mid-morning. The good news was the car was parked on grass and easy to reach; the tricky news was that an all-keys-lost BMW is one of the more involved jobs in the trade. The 3 Series uses a CAS immobiliser module, and the new key has to be generated from the vehicle data, written to a virgin transponder, and paired to the remote using the BMW diagnostic protocol. Not every locksmith carries the kit to do that.
We drove out with the mobile workshop. We hooked up to the OBD port, read the CAS data, generated a new key, cut a fresh blade to the original key code, and paired the new remote to the car. The driver was back at the event within a couple of hours — the day recovered, the BMW back in service, and a spare cut at the same time so it couldn't happen again.
Why BMW All-Keys-Lost Isn't Just "Cutting a Key"
A lot of locksmiths shy away from BMW all-keys-lost jobs. The reason is the CAS, FEM and BDC modules — these are the immobiliser units that store the key data, and on a modern BMW they're not just chips you can read and clone. The new key has to be generated using the BMW-specific diagnostic workflow, and the pairing has to be done with the right tool. Get it wrong and the module can lock itself out, which is a much more expensive problem to fix.
We carry the BMW-specific kit in the van, including the diagnostic software, the key programmer, the remote pairing tool, and the online access needed for the latest G-series models. Every BMW we've done in the last few years has been finished in the customer's driveway or car park, on the day, with the car never leaving the spot.
The 3 Series Specifically
The BMW 3 Series is the definitive BMW — the executive saloon that's been the brand's best-seller since the original E21. It turns up everywhere from the school run to the car park of a country hotel, and its keys have evolved with it. The E90, F30 and G20 generations all use a CAS or FEM module with a Megamos AES transponder, and the remote is a separate pairing step from the immobiliser. It's a routine job for us, but it needs the right kit and the right workflow — which is why it can't be done at a supermarket key kiosk or by a general handyman.
