The Plasterer, the Transit, and the Monday Morning That Almost Wasn't
7:30am on a Monday, and a self-employed plasterer from Scarborough was standing in his driveway on Seamer Road staring at an empty key hook. His Ford Transit Custom — loaded with plaster, trowels, a mixer, and the materials for a full week's job — sat locked and silent. His only key had vanished somewhere between Friday evening and Monday morning.
He'd spent ten minutes tearing the house apart — coat pockets, kitchen drawers, the bedside table, even the fridge (everyone checks the fridge eventually). Nothing. The job he was due at in Malton at 8am was worth three days' money, and he couldn't afford to let the customer down — or lose the work to another plasterer who'd answer their phone next time.
He called us at 7:35am. We were with him on Seamer Road by 7:50am. The Transit Custom uses a proximity smart key — you don't put it in the ignition, the van just senses it. These keys are more complex than a standard remote, but we carry the diagnostic tablet to programme them in the van. We cut and programmed a brand-new smart key right there on his driveway, synced to his van, and had the engine running by 8:15am.
He made it to Malton by 8:35am — a bit late, but with a working van and a very understanding customer who'd been there himself once. We cut him a second spare key the following Saturday morning at his house — because after what just happened, one key was never going to be enough again.
