Key Won't Turn in the Ignition? Try These First

Before you call us, try these five things. They cost nothing and fix about a third of "key won't turn" calls — if they work, you save the call-out. If they don't work, at least you've ruled out the easy stuff and we can get straight to diagnosing the real problem.

1. The Steering Wheel Lock Trick

This is the single most common cause. Your steering wheel has locked against the ignition — usually because you turned the wheel after switching off and it ratcheted a few degrees. The steering lock puts pressure on the ignition barrel, and the key won't turn because it's mechanically jammed.

Fix: Grip the steering wheel with both hands and pull it as hard as you can in the direction it moves freely (usually about 5–10mm — you'll feel it). While holding that tension, try turning the key gently. The pressure should release the lock and the key will turn. This works on 90%+ of steering-lock-imposed "key won't turn" situations.

2. Is the Car in Park?

Automatic cars have an interlock that prevents the key from turning unless the gear selector is fully in Park. If the shifter is slightly off-position — even by a millimetre — the ignition barrel won't release. Push the gear selector firmly into Park and try the key again.

3. Check the Key Fob Battery

On push-to-start and smart-key systems, a dead fob battery means the car can't detect the key — so the steering lock doesn't release and the start button does nothing. Hold the fob directly against the start button (many cars have an NFC chip as a fallback) or use the manual key to unlock the door, then try pressing the start button with the fob. If the car starts, you know it's a dead fob battery.

4. Check the Battery Voltage

A car with a low or dead battery can't release the electronic steering lock solenoid, and the key won't turn. If your dashboard lights are dim, the radio is dead, or the engine won't crank — your battery is flat. Jump-start the car or charge the battery. The steering lock solenoid usually has enough juice to release once there's proper voltage.

5. Don't Spray WD-40 Into the Ignition

We see this too often — someone Googles "key stuck in ignition" and a forum tells them to spray WD-40 into the keyhole. Don't do it. WD-40 is a penetrating lubricant and a solvent — it'll wash whatever grease is left out of the barrel, attract dust and grit, and can damage the electrical contacts inside. If the barrel genuinely needs lubricating, use a tiny dab of graphite powder. If it's beyond that, the barrel is worn and needs replacing.

Key Stuck in the Ignition — Common Causes

If you've tried all five things above and the key is still stuck, you've got a mechanical or electronic problem that needs a professional. Here's what's probably wrong:

• Worn ignition barrel wafers: After 10+ years of daily use, the internal spring-loaded wafers that align with your key pattern lose tension. A worn wafer catches on the key's profile as you try to withdraw it. The extraction requires gentle manipulation with a specialty tool — too much force and the wafer jams permanently.
• Failed return spring: The barrel mechanism has a spring that returns the key to the off position. If it breaks, the key stays in position. The barrel needs replacing.
• Faulty shift interlock solenoid: The solenoid that releases the key when the car is in Park has failed. This is an electrical fault, not a mechanical one — but the symptom is the same: the key won't come out of the ignition.
• Damaged or bent key: If the key blade is twisted or bent from being used as a bottle opener (yes, people do it) or from being stuck in a door that got pushed, it won't slide out of the barrel smoothly.
• Unknown intermittent fault: Sometimes the electronic interlock has a gremlin — connect a diagnostic scanner and it'll show pending codes that narrow down the culprit.

Whatever You Do, Don't Force It

This is the single most important piece of advice on this page. If you grip the key with pliers and yank, one of two things happens: (1) the key blade snaps off inside the barrel, turning a simple stuck-key extraction into an ignition barrel replacement plus broken-key extraction — double the work, double the cost. Or (2) the barrel comes out with the key, destroying the steering lock housing and turning a £120 repair into a £400+ one.

Can You Release a Stuck Key Without Replacing the Barrel?

Usually, yes. If the problem is the shift interlock, a failing battery, or a steering lock jam, we can release the key without replacing anything. If the barrel is worn or the return spring has failed, the barrel itself needs replacement — but we'll tell you that before we start work.
