An ignition barrel replacement is one of those jobs most people never expect to need until it happens to them. The barrel — the part of the dashboard where you insert the key — is a precision-engineered mechanical part. After tens of thousands of insertions and rotations, the internal wafers, springs, and pins wear out. The key starts to feel sloppy in the barrel, you have to wiggle it more to get it to turn, and eventually it stops working entirely.

Common Causes of Ignition Barrel Failure

• Wear and tear: The most common cause. The barrel is a moving mechanical part that operates every time you drive. After 10+ years of daily use, the wafers lose their tension and the barrel stops recognising the key profile reliably.
• Heavy keychain: A heavy bunch of keys hanging from the ignition key puts constant downward pressure on the barrel and steering lock, accelerating wear.
• Forcing a worn key: If the key is worn, it forces the barrel wafers to misalign. Over time, this damages the barrel too — and a worn key plus a worn barrel is a vicious cycle.
• Failed return spring: The internal spring that returns the key to the off position when you switch off the engine can fail. The key then gets stuck in the "on" or "accessory" position.
• Steering lock interlock fault: Modern cars have a solenoid that locks the steering when the key is removed. If this fails, the steering lock stays engaged or refuses to release — usually mistaken for a barrel problem but related.
• Attempted theft or forced entry: If someone has tried to force the steering lock or break the barrel, the mechanism is damaged and needs replacement.

Key Stuck in the Ignition — What to Do

If your key is stuck in the ignition, don't force it. The most common cause is the interlock solenoid failing to release — usually because of a low battery, the car not being fully in park, or a worn barrel. Try these steps first:

• Make sure the car is fully in Park (automatic) or in neutral with the handbrake on (manual)
• Try jiggling the steering wheel left and right while turning the key
• Check the key fob battery — a dead fob can confuse the immobiliser and prevent the interlock from releasing
• Don't spray WD-40 into the barrel — it can damage the electrical contacts and the wafers
