First: Why Traditional Car Alarms Don't Work Anymore
Think about the last time you heard a car alarm in a car park. Did you look? Did you check whether someone was breaking into the car? Or did you roll your eyes and carry on? Exactly. Everyone ignores car alarms because false alarms are constant — a pigeon lands on the roof, a lorry rumbles past, and the siren goes off. Thieves know this. Instead, it requires you to enter a personal PIN code using the buttons already in the car — typically the steering wheel controls, the indicator stalk, or the window switches — before the engine will start.
The car will crank perfectly. It will sound normal. The starter motor will spin. But the fuel pump won't fire, the ECU won't release the immobiliser, and the engine will never start. A thief has no way of knowing why the car won't go — there's no error message, no blinking LED, and nothing to trace. So a Ghost Is Better — But Who Needs One?
Ghost immobilisers make the most sense for cars that are particularly attractive to thieves: performance models like Golf Rs, Audi S/RS, BMW M cars; luxury SUVs like Range Rovers and Mercedes GLEs; and any keyless-entry car parked on a driveway (where relay attacks are common). If your car is worth £20k+ and you park it outside, a ghost is one of the best investments you can make. It's also worth checking your insurance — many providers now require additional security measures for certain models, and a ghost immobiliser may be the difference between coverage and a rejected claim.
What About Ghost Immobiliser Problems?
Ghost immobilisers are reliable — but they're not immune to problems. The most common issues we see in Scarborough:
- Lost or forgotten PIN: The installer programs the PIN during installation. If you forget it, or if you buy a used car with a ghost already fitted and the previous owner didn't tell you the code, the car won't start. We can often recover or reset the PIN — give us a call.
- Flat battery aftermath: If the car's battery has been disconnected or gone completely flat, some ghost modules need to be re-armed. This is usually a case of entering the PIN once after reconnecting the battery.
- Phone app pairing issues: Some ghost models use a Bluetooth phone app as an alternative to the PIN. If the app unpairs, if you get a new phone, or if an app update breaks the connection, the car won't start until the PIN is entered manually.

If your car is an older model with a physical key and no keyless entry, the value proposition is less clear — a decent alarm or a steering wheel lock is probably sufficient.
