The Beach, the Bucket, and the Buried Key
It was a blazing-hot Saturday in August — one of those rare days when Filey Bay looks almost Mediterranean. A family of five had driven over from Leeds for the day, set up camp on the sand with buckets, spades, windbreak, and coolbox. At some point in the chaos of arrival, the car key — the only key they had — fell out of a beach bag and got buried under a towel. Then the tide started coming in.
By the time they realised and started searching, the key had spent an hour in wet sand. They found it — but it was dead. Salt water had got inside the fob and shorted the circuit board. The car wouldn't unlock, let alone start. They were stranded with three tired kids, a boot full of sandy gear, and a rapidly emptying car park.
We got the call at 4:30pm and were on the road within two minutes. The A165 was busy — it always is on a summer Saturday — but we know the quiet lanes that run parallel and got to Filey seafront in just over half an hour.
