A Bit About Whitby

Whitby needs no introduction to anyone who knows the Yorkshire coast. It's the town of Captain Cook and Bram Stoker's Dracula, split in two by the River Esk and joined by that iconic swing bridge. The East Side is the old town — narrow cobbled streets, the 199 steps up to the abbey, and the kind of tight corners that keep delivery drivers awake at night. The West Side is the classic seaside resort: arcades, fish and chip shops, and the long curve of West Cliff with its whalebone arch.

Between the tourists, the fishing boats, the goths on a Dracula pilgrimage, and the locals who've lived here for generations, Whitby has a pace all its own. Summer weekends the population practically triples — and so do our call-outs. The seafront car parks, the holiday cottages, the lanes behind Church Street: we've done lockouts in every corner of this town.

Story from the Road

The Couple, the Cottage, and the Key in the Bay

It was a Friday evening in late July, and Whitby was buzzing — the last of the day-trippers were filtering out and the weekend crowd was arriving. We got a call from a couple who'd driven up from Nottingham, booked a cottage up one of the steep lanes near the abbey. They'd unloaded the car, shut the boot, and realised the car keys were inside with the luggage. The spare key? Back in Nottingham — 140 miles away.

The cottage key was on the same ring, so they were stuck outside with nowhere to go and a car they couldn't move blocking a neighbour's driveway. They'd already tried the RAC, but were told it would be hours. When we answered on the second ring and said we'd be there within 40 minutes, the relief in the woman's voice was audible.

We drove the A171 coast road — fast but careful — and pulled up outside the cottage at 8:15pm. The car was a three-year-old Ford Focus with deadlocking, the kind that's tricky if you don't know the mechanism. We had the door open in under eight minutes without a scratch on the paint. The neighbour came out with two cups of tea while we worked — turns out she'd been the one to recommend us after using us herself the year before.

Keys retrieved, holiday saved. They were in the pub by 9pm. That's a typical Whitby Friday for us — holiday let lockouts are our bread and butter in this town, and we've got the routine down to a fine art. The couple left us a glowing review and now call us every year before they drive up, just to check we're still around.

Local Knowledge

Whitby — What to Expect

We've been doing call-outs in Whitby for years. Here's what's useful to know.

Holiday Let Lockouts

Whitby has hundreds of holiday cottages and B&Bs. We regularly help visitors who've locked keys in the car outside their rental — often late at night. We'll get you back in and back to your holiday.

Narrow Streets, No Problem

The old town's cobbled streets and tight corners don't phase us. Our vans are equipped to reach vehicles in the trickiest spots — Church Street, Henrietta Street, the lot.

A171 & A169 Access

We come in via the A171 coast road or the A169 across the moors depending on conditions. Both routes are familiar to us — we pick the fastest one based on time of day and traffic.

All-Year Coverage

Whitby gets busy in summer and quiet in winter — but we cover it all year round. Whether it's a packed August bank holiday or a snowy January morning, we'll make the drive.
