A Bit About Staithes & Runswick Bay
Staithes is the northernmost village in our coverage area and one of the most distinctive places on the Yorkshire coast. Once a busy fishing port — Captain Cook worked here as a shop apprentice before heading to Whitby and then the Pacific — it's now better known for its artists' community and the steep, winding streets that tumble down to a sheltered harbour. The cottages are painted in whites and pastels, and on a sunny day the whole place looks like it belongs on a postcard.
Runswick Bay, just south of Staithes, is a quieter affair — a cluster of red-roofed cottages on a hillside above a perfect sandy beach. The cliff-top car park offers one of the best views on this coast, and it's also where we get most of our call-outs: keys locked in boots while people change into walking gear, lost fobs on the beach, and the occasional holidaymaker who's driven down the steep access road only to discover their key won't start the engine for the drive back up.
Story from the Road
The Artist, the Audi, and the Seagull with a Grudge
A painter from London had rented a cottage in Staithes for a fortnight — one of the artists' residency programmes that the village is known for. She'd driven up in a three-year-old Audi A3, set up her easel by the harbour, and spent a week producing a stunning series of sea-and-sky watercolours. On the morning of day nine, she walked out to the car clutching a flask of tea, pressed the unlock button on her key fob, and got nothing. Dead battery in the key.
She tried the manual key blade — but the lock barrel in the driver's door had seized from years of never being used. Modern cars are like that; most people never touch the physical lock. She was locked out of the Audi with half her painting gear in the boot, a rising tide in the harbour, and — she mentioned this several times — a particularly aggressive seagull that had taken a dislike to her and was camped on the roof of the car.
We got the call and made the drive up the coast — A171 to Whitby, then the A174 to Staithes. The roads were quiet and we pulled up in just under an hour. The seagull was still there, glaring. We shooed it off with a rolled-up newspaper from the van, then got to work. We opened the Audi without triggering the alarm, retrieved the gear, and programmed a fresh key on site. The whole job — including the seagull standoff — took about 30 minutes.
She was so grateful she insisted on giving us a small watercolour she'd done of the harbour. It's now framed in our workshop — the only payment we've ever received in art. She finished her residency, sold every painting at the end-of-stay exhibition, and still sends us a Christmas card every year. The seagull, we assume, has moved on to a new adversary.
