Goathland & Grosmont

Heartbeat country. Remote but reachable — we know the moorland roads and can get to you even in poor weather. Lockouts, key cutting, and transponder programming for locals and visitors alike.

Goathland and Grosmont sit deep in the North York Moors, surrounded by heather moorland, forestry tracks, and some of the most dramatic scenery in Yorkshire. Goathland is famous as the filming location for Aidensfield in Heartbeat, and Grosmont is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway engine sheds. Both draw thousands of visitors every year — hikers, steam railway enthusiasts, and families exploring the moors. Remote locations mean a lost or broken car key can feel like a disaster, but we're familiar with every road in and out. We'll reach you wherever you are on the moors.

Remote Doesn't Mean Out of Reach

Goathland — made famous as Aidensfield in Heartbeat — and Grosmont, home of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway engine sheds, sit deep in the North York Moors. They're remote, but we know every road in and out.

We've done lockouts at the Goathland car park in peak tourist season, key replacements for Grosmont residents, and emergency call-outs when visitors have broken their only key miles from anywhere. The roads are winding and the weather can turn, but we'll get there.

From the Van

A Bit About Heartbeat Country

If Goathland looks familiar, it's because you've seen it on television. As Aidensfield in the long-running series Heartbeat, its wide green, stone cottages, and the railway station (actually Goathland station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) became some of the most recognisable views in British TV. Today the coaches still roll in, the pub still serves walkers and day-trippers, and the sheep still have right of way on every road.

Grosmont, a few miles down the Esk Valley, is the working end of the steam railway — the engine sheds and workshops are here, and the sound of whistles and chuffing steam is part of daily life. Both villages sit deep in the North York Moors National Park, reached by roads that wind through heather moorland and thick woodland. In summer it's glorious; in winter it can be one of the most exposed parts of our entire coverage area. We always carry a shovel and a tow rope.

Story from the Road

Snow, Steam, and a Skoda on the Moors

January, 8pm, and the moors were under a proper dusting of snow — not blizzard conditions, but enough to make the roads interesting. We got a call from a volunteer at the Grosmont engine sheds. He'd been working late on a restoration project — a vintage locomotive that had been under tarpaulin for months — and when he finally came out to his Skoda Octavia, the key fob was completely dead. The car wouldn't unlock, and the manual key blade had been removed from the fob housing months ago and never replaced.

Grosmont in January at night is not the place to be stuck. The shed lights were off, the temperature was dropping past freezing, and the last train had long since departed. To make things worse, his phone battery was at 4%. He called us, gave his location, and then his phone died mid-sentence. We had enough information — Skoda Octavia, Grosmont engine sheds — and we set off.

We took the A171 then cut across the moorland road to Grosmont, the headlights picking out snowflakes and the occasional sheep. It took about 55 minutes — slower than usual because of the conditions, but steady. We found him huddled in the doorway of the shed workshop, wrapped in an old railway blanket that smelled of coal smoke and engine oil. He was cold but in good spirits.

We got the Skoda open without triggering the alarm, then programmed a new remote key on the spot — the van's equipment works fine even in sub-zero temperatures. The engine turned over on the second attempt and the heater kicked in fast. We followed him as far as the main road to make sure he got through the snow safely, then headed home. He rang the next day to thank us properly and has become one of our best word-of-mouth referrers in the Grosmont community. The restoration project? Finished that spring — and we got a private tour of the sheds.
