A Bit About the Bay
Robin Hood's Bay is one of those places that doesn't quite feel real. The main street — a single road that drops at a 1-in-3 gradient from the clifftop down to the sea — is lined with cottages, B&Bs, and the kind of tucked-away pubs that only locals and the determined ever find. There's no vehicle access to the bottom; if you're driving down, you park at the top and walk. The Bay was once a smuggling hotspot, and the network of passages between houses is said to have let contraband travel from beach to clifftop without ever seeing daylight.
Today it's a holiday destination first and foremost, drawing walkers on the Cleveland Way, families on summer breaks, and fossil hunters on the shore. The car parks at the top fill early in season, and the steep climb back up is memorable for anyone who's forgotten the milk. For us, it's a regular stop — the holiday cottages alone generate dozens of lockout calls every year.
Story from the Road
The Walking Group, the Wrong Pocket, and the Fob in the Ford
A group of six ramblers had driven in convoy from Durham for a weekend of coastal walking. Two cars — a Honda CR-V and a Ford Kuga — parked at the top car park on a Saturday morning. The Honda driver was the organiser and had the route, the packed lunches, and — crucially — the Ford's spare key in her rucksack. The Ford driver had the working key in his jacket pocket. Or so he thought.
After a glorious walk down to Boggle Hole and back, they returned to find the Ford key wasn't in any pocket, any rucksack, or any lunch bag. It had fallen out somewhere on the six-mile coastal loop — possibly during a steep scramble, possibly when he'd stopped to take photos at the cliff edge. They had one key between two cars and it was in the Honda — which was now blocked in by the locked Ford.
We got the call at 4pm and drove the A171 via Cloughton. We parked at the top, walked down — yes, walked, because you don't drive a van down the Bay's main street unless you're delivering furniture — and found the group in the Wainwright's beer garden, already on their second round. They'd decided waiting with a view and a pint was the sensible option. Can't argue with that logic.
We opened the Ford without a mark, retrieved the Honda's spare from the boot, and had both cars freed within half an hour. The Ford driver bought us a drink — non-alcoholic, we were still on call — and the group vowed to invest in surf-key lockboxes for future walks. The Ford key? Likely somewhere on the Cleveland Way, enjoying a sea view of its own. We programmed a replacement there and then.
