Coast & Dales

Between the Moors and the Sea

Cloughton sits on the A171 coast road between Scarborough and Whitby, a village of stone cottages and farmland that stretches from the main road down towards the cliffs at Cloughton Wyke. Staintondale is a scattered parish just beyond — more a collection of farms and lanes than a traditional village, with Harwood Dale tucked into the valley and a stretch of dramatic coastline that includes the old alum works at Ravenscar.

These are villages where the Cleveland Way and the Cinder Track bring walkers and cyclists through in numbers. We get called out here for lockouts at the trailhead car parks, lost keys on the clifftops, and the regular stream of residents who need a spare key made without driving into Scarborough.

From the Van

A Bit About Cloughton & Staintondale

Cloughton is one of those villages that rewards slowing down. The A171 rushes past, but if you turn off you find a proper community: the old school, the church, the pub that's been serving walkers and locals for generations, and the lanes that lead down towards Cloughton Wyke where the coastline gets properly dramatic. Staintondale is quieter still — scattered farms, grazing land, and views across the North Sea that stretch forever on a clear day.

What brings people here is the walking. The Cleveland Way hugs the clifftops through this stretch, and the old railway line — now the Cinder Track — cuts inland through Harwood Dale. On a good weekend the car parks at the trailheads fill up before 10am. And that's when we get the calls: keys locked in the boot while changing into boots, or a fob that's slipped out of a rucksack pocket somewhere between the car park and the first viewpoint.

Story from the Road

The Cyclist, the Cinder Track, and the Key That Went for a Ride

A keen cyclist had parked his VW Transporter at the Cloughton trailhead, unloaded his bike from the back, changed into cycling gear, and set off up the Cinder Track towards Whitby. A glorious 25-mile round trip on a converted railway line — mostly flat, mostly scenic, entirely enjoyable. The problem? He'd left the van's only key in the pocket of his jeans, which he'd stashed in the back of the van, which he'd then locked with the central locking button on the driver's door before closing it.

He realised three hours later, back at the van, hot and tired after a fantastic ride, reaching for a key that wasn't in any of his jersey pockets. The van was locked tight. His phone, wallet, and car key were all inside. He borrowed a phone from a fellow walker — a retired couple from Sheffield who'd been walking this stretch of coast every year since the 1980s. They not only lent him the phone but waited with him, sharing their flask of tea.

We were there in under 20 minutes — Cloughton is practically in our backyard. The Transporter's locks are familiar territory, and we had the side door open in five minutes without a scratch. The cyclist retrieved his jeans, his key, and his dignity. He insisted on buying us lunch (we politely declined — we had another job waiting in Scarborough), but he left us a stellar review that mentioned not just our speed but the fact that we knew the difference between a T4 and a T5 lock before we even touched the van.

The retired couple from Sheffield? They took our card and called us two days later — their car key had been playing up for weeks and they wanted a spare made. We drove out to their holiday cottage in Fylingthorpe and programmed them a new key on the spot. That's the coast for you — one job turns into three before the week is out.
