Why VW Keys Aren't Just "Any Old Key"
Modern Volkswagens use the MQB platform (for petrol and diesel) and the MEB platform (for the electric ID. range). Both have the same challenge for anyone programming a new key: component protection. The car's immobiliser will reject a new key until VW's online system says the key is allowed. A standard aftermarket programmer can write a new transponder chip, but the car will ignore it until the online handshake happens.
We carry the online access needed to do that authorisation at your car. No dealer appointment, no waiting a week for a key to arrive in the post, no recovery truck to get the car to a VW main dealer. The whole job is done in your driveway or workplace, usually within a couple of hours.
The ID. Electric Range
The VW ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 are part of a new generation of electric cars that need the same locksmith attention as their petrol counterparts — but the security is tighter. The keys are slim proximity fobs with a push-button start, and the cars are some of the most secure in the VW range. We programme spares for all three ID. models, including the latest GTX performance variants.
The VW Range We Cover
Golf, Polo, Tiguan, Touran, Passat, Arteon, T-Roc, T-Cross, Touareg, ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID. Buzz, Transporter, Caddy, Crafter, Amarok. We programme spares, recover lost keys, and open any of them without damage. The Mk7 and Mk8 Golf are the most common VW we see — they're everywhere on Yorkshire roads — but every model in the range is something we can do.

Story from the Road
The VW ID.3, the Garage, and the Missing Spare
A Driffield independent garage had a 2021 VW ID.3 on its courtesy car fleet — a smart move given that an EV courtesy car appeals to a particular kind of customer. The only working key was with the driver of the customer's car the garage was working on. The garage couldn't move the ID.3 around the workshop, couldn't hand it over to a customer, and couldn't even lock it properly.
The VW main dealer wanted to book the car in for a week and quoted £485. We had a different idea. The ID.3 is a modern car with modern security, but it's still just a key for a Volkswagen. We drove from Scarborough to Driffield with the mobile workshop and the online component protection access we keep in the van, read the immobiliser, paired the new fob, and authenticated the new key against VW's servers. Two hours, on the day, at the workshop.
Story from the Road
The VW Caddy, the Driveway, and the Single Key
A self-employed tradesman in Scarborough had bought a black 2021 VW Caddy a few months earlier as a used van — a one-key van, like most used vans are. He'd been running on that single key since, telling himself "I'll get a spare sorted at some point" every time he got in. The morning he called us, he'd finally decided enough was enough.
The Caddy was parked on the brick drive, the toolkit still in the back from the previous day's work. The Mk4 Caddy is built on the same MQB platform as the Golf, so the security is the same level — Megamos AES transponder, online component protection, no shortcut possible. We pulled up, read the immobiliser, cut a new blade, and ran the VW Group authorisation. An hour and a half later, the owner had two working keys, the van still on the drive, the toolkit still in the back.
Story from the Road
The SEAT Leon, the Lost Key, and No Spare
SEAT is part of the VW Group, so a SEAT Leon is built on the same MQB platform as a Golf — and a lost Leon key carries exactly the same challenge: the Megamos AES transponder, the online component protection, the VW Group pairing handshake. A blue 2019 Leon on a Scarborough drive, the only key gone somewhere between the front door and the kerb.
The dealer would have had the car recovered, waited a week for a key from Spain, and charged north of £280. We drove to them, read the immobiliser through the OBD port, cut a fresh blade, generated a new transponder, and ran the VW Group authorisation from the van. The owner was at work by lunchtime — with a spare in their pocket.
