How the Job Went

The owner had bought the Caddy a few months earlier as a used van — a one-key van, like most used vans are. He'd been running on that single key since, telling himself "I'll get a spare sorted at some point" every time he got in the van. The morning he called us, he'd finally decided enough was enough. The Caddy was how he earned his living, and a lost key would mean a recovery truck, a dealer visit, and a week off the road.

The Caddy was parked on the brick drive outside the house, with the toolkit still in the back from the previous day's work. We pulled up, plugged into the OBD port, and read the immobiliser. The Caddy uses the same MQB-based security as the Golf and the Transporter, so the workflow was familiar — pair a new remote, cut a new blade, run the online component protection authorisation so VW's servers accept the new key.

An hour and a half later, the owner had two working keys, the van was still on the drive, the toolkit was still in the back, and the next morning's work wasn't interrupted. He'd been carrying the single key around for months waiting for the day he lost it — the spare meant he never had to find out what that would cost him.

The VW Caddy — Tradesman's Van, Family Runaround

The Caddy occupies a unique spot in the VW van range. Smaller than the Transporter, easier to park, but with enough load space for most trades and most families. The Mk4 Caddy (the current shape from 2020 onwards) is built on the same MQB platform as the Golf Mk8, so it gets the same immobiliser, the same component protection, and the same level of key security. That's good news if you're a customer — it means the security is taken seriously. It's also why a supermarket key kiosk can't help you.

We programme spares for the Mk3, Mk4 and the latest Mk5 Caddy. We do the Caddy Cargo (the panel van trades version), the Caddy Maxi (the long-wheelbase version), and the Caddy California (the camper version). They're all the same key family, so we keep the blanks in the van, and we can usually finish a spare in well under two hours.

Why One Key Isn't Enough for a Work Van

If you run a van for your work and you've been doing it on one key, you already know the calculation. A spare key for a Caddy is a small fraction of what a lost-key job would cost — both in cash and in lost work. A recovery truck to a dealer, a week waiting for the key to come from Germany, and a bill that starts at £300 and goes up. A spare, done on the drive while you keep working, costs a fraction of that.

It's not just tradespeople either. Families with a Caddy as a second car often run on one key because the second key "got lost somewhere" and was never replaced. The Caddy will lock you out as readily as a Golf — and the immobiliser won't accept a copy from a kiosk. A proper spare, programmed properly, is the only way to be sure.
