VW Transporter T6 — Spare Key
on a Scarborough Driveway

A white long-wheelbase VW Transporter T6, parked on its brick driveway in Scarborough with the owner's tools in the back and jobs booked for the next morning. He'd been running on one key for months and finally decided he couldn't risk it any longer — one lost key and the van, the tools, and the week's work would all be stuck. We got it sorted the same day.

How the Job Went

The owner was a self-employed tradesman — his Transporter is how he earns his living. He'd bought the van used about a year ago and it came with one key. For months he'd been telling himself "I'll get a spare sorted at some point," and every Monday morning he'd unlock the van with that same single key and hope it stayed in his pocket. This time he decided to actually get a spare done — before the inevitable happened.

The T6 was on the driveway with the owner's kit still in the back. He couldn't leave it at a dealer for a week and he couldn't move tools into a courtesy car — the van IS his kit bag. We pulled up, read the immobiliser through the OBD port, and got to work. The T6 uses VW's component protection system, which means the new key has to be authorised online before the van will accept it. We ran the handshake from the laptop in the van, and within 90 minutes the owner had two working keys.

The whole job was done without the van moving an inch, the toolkit staying in the back, and the owner getting on with his afternoon. Next morning he drove to the job with a spare key in his pocket and one less thing to worry about.

The VW Transporter — A Van That Earns Its Keep

The Transporter is the backbone of the UK's trades. From the T4 to the T5 to the T6 and now the T6.1 and T7, it's the van that builders, sparks, plumbers, chippies, plasterers and couriers all run. And nearly every used Transporter gets sold with one key, because the previous owner lost the spare somewhere between a job in Brid and a quote in Whitby. If you drop that single key into a puddle on a job site, or it falls out of your pocket into a skip, the van is dead — and so is the week's work.

The T6 in particular is worth protecting with a spare. It uses VW's MQB-based immobiliser with AES Megamos transponders and component protection — the same security layer as the Golf and Passat. That means it's secure, but it also means you can't just get a cheap copy made at a supermarket kiosk. You need someone with the right diagnostic kit and the right online access. We carry both.

Why One Key Isn't Enough for a Work Van

If you're a tradesman and you've been running with one key, you already know the feeling. It's that half-second panic every time you pat your pocket and don't feel it straight away, followed by the relief when you find it in the other pocket. The problem is that one day the relief won't come — and you'll have a van full of tools, a job booked, and no way to start the engine.

A spare key for a Transporter costs less than a day's lost work. It costs less than the recovery truck that would have to come and get the van if the only key was lost. And it buys you something you can't put a price on: the peace of mind that you won't be the tradesman standing in a customer's driveway explaining why you can't start your own van.

Driveway Call-Out

The Transporter never moved. Tools stayed in the back, owner stayed at home.

Component Protection

VW online authorisation done in the van — no dealer, no waiting, no downtime.
