VW ID.3 — Spare Key for a

This week's call-out was for a 2021 VW ID.3 — Volkswagen's first proper electric hatchback. The car was a courtesy car at a garage in Driffield, and the garage needed its own spare so the ID.3 could be moved around the workshop and handed over to customers. Spare key work on a 2021 EV isn't straightforward — most locksmiths won't touch it. We did, and the ID.3 is now fully sorted.

How the Job Went
The call came in from a Driffield independent garage. They had a 2021 VW ID.3 on their courtesy car fleet — a smart move on their part, given that an EV courtesy car appeals to a particular kind of customer — but the only working key was with the driver of the customer's car they were working on. The garage couldn't move the ID.3 around the workshop, couldn't hand it over to a customer, and couldn't even lock it properly.
The VW main dealer was the obvious first call, but the dealer wanted to book the ID.3 in for a week and quoted a figure that made the garage manager wince. We had a different idea. The ID.3 is a modern car with modern security, but it's still just a key for a Volkswagen — and modern Volkswagens are very much our bread and butter.
We made the run from Scarborough to Driffield with the mobile workshop and the online component protection access we keep in the van. The garage rolled the ID.3 out into the yard for us. We read the car's immobiliser through the OBD port, generated a new Megamos AES transponder chip, paired the new proximity fob to the ID.3's comfort system, and authenticated the new key against VW's servers. Total time on site: just under two hours.
The new spare key now does everything the original does — unlock, lock, push-button start, full remote functionality. The garage can move the ID.3 wherever it needs to, hand it over to customers, and lock it up at the end of the day. The original key (the one with the customer) still works exactly as it did before. Both keys are now paired to the car.
Why the VW ID.3 Is Harder Than a Normal VW Key
The ID.3 sits on Volkswagen's MQB-EVO platform, which is the company's most modern vehicle architecture. The key is a slim proximity smart fob — no flip blade, no metal key to speak of. The car is started with a push button, and the fob just needs to be inside the vehicle for the start to be authorised. It's the same setup you'll find on the ID.4, ID.5, the new Tiguan, the new Passat, and most other recent VWs.
The catch is component protection. Modern Volkswagens don't just need a key to be programmed — they need the new key to be authorised online with VW's servers. A standard aftermarket key programmer will read the immobiliser and write a new transponder chip, but the car will reject the new chip until VW's component protection (CP) system says it's allowed. Without that handshake, the new key simply doesn't work, no matter how perfectly the chip is cloned.
We carry the online access needed to authorise a new VW key on the spot. Most locksmiths don't — and that's why so many will turn around and tell an ID.3 owner the job "needs to go to the dealer." It doesn't. It needs someone with the right kit and the right online access, both of which we have.
Garage Trade Work — A Growing Part of What We Do
This job is a good example of a growing side of the business. Garages up and down the Yorkshire coast run courtesy car fleets, take in customer cars for service or repair, and need spare keys for all of them. The main dealer will happily programme a spare key for them — for a fee that often makes the garage think twice. We do the same work, on the same day, at the garage's own premises, and the garage's customer never knows the difference.

EV-Specific Key Considerations
The VW ID.3 is part of a new generation of electric cars that are starting to need the same kind of locksmith attention as their petrol and diesel counterparts. Most early EVs were sold with one key only — buyers assumed the proximity fob would never fail, and many didn't bother with a spare. Now, three to five years on, those single-key EVs are starting to need a second key, and the owners are discovering that getting one isn't always easy.
We programme spare keys for the VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, BMW iX, i4 and iX1, Audi Q4 e-tron, MG4, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Tesla Model 3 and Y (with caveats), Polestar 2, and the rest of the modern EV range. The job is the same as a spare key for any other car — read the immobiliser, generate a new transponder, programme the remote, authenticate against the manufacturer's server — but the kit and the access have to be right.
