How the Job Went

The call came in mid-morning. The customer worked a farm on the North Yorkshire moors near Whitby and had completely lost their only Audi A1 key — somewhere in the yard, the barns, the fields, or the surrounding lanes. They'd spent the previous evening and the early morning turning the place upside down, but the key was gone. The car was sitting in the yard, the doors unlocked, but without a working key it wasn't going anywhere. The farmer couldn't get to the livestock market. The livestock market couldn't wait.

A main dealer would have been useless to them — the nearest Audi dealer is over an hour away, the appointment would have been days out, and the recovery truck to get the car there would have been a small fortune on top of the £300+ replacement key. We had a different idea. We loaded the mobile workshop, gave them an honest ETA, and made the drive to the farm.

We were on the yard within the hour. The Audi A1 was unlocked, which made life easy — we could go straight to work without first having to gain entry. We read the vehicle's immobiliser through the OBD port, generated a brand-new Audi-compatible transponder chip, cut a fresh blade to the car's key code, and programmed a new remote fob. The whole job was done in the open air, with the customer watching, and a couple of curious farm dogs supervising from a polite distance.

The new key works exactly like the original. Unlock, lock, boot release, push-button start — every function intact, the immobiliser fully paired to the new transponder, the central locking synced to the new fob. Total time on site: just over an hour. Total cost: a fraction of the dealer quote. The customer made the livestock market with time to spare, and we left the farm to the sound of a very relieved farmer starting his Audi and heading down the lane.

All Keys Lost — What That Actually Means

"All keys lost" sounds dramatic but, in practice, it's a job we do several times a week. It means there's no working key we can clone from — we have to generate the new key from the vehicle itself, using the immobiliser data and the VIN. The transponder chip inside the new key is a virgin chip with no code on it until we write the immobiliser data into it. Once paired, the car will only accept that key (and any spares you ask us to programme at the same time).

For the customer, the practical difference between an all-keys-lost job and a spare-key job is cost and time. A spare key, when you already have a working original, is from £85 for a non-remote key or £125 for a remote flip key. An all-keys-lost replacement, because we have to start from scratch, is from £185. Either way, the work is done at your location — your car never has to leave wherever it is, and you never have to wait for a key to be ordered from Germany.

Why We Make Such a Difference in Rural Yorkshire

Farms are a particular specialism of ours. The Yorkshire coast and moors are full of working farms, smallholdings, and rural businesses, and the nearest main dealer for many of them is an hour or more away. For a farm near Whitby like this one, the closest Audi dealer is well over an hour by road, and that's if they're open. A lost or broken key for a farm worker is more than an inconvenience — it's the difference between making the livestock market or missing it, getting the feed delivery or going without, getting the children to school on time or not.

Our mobile workshop is built for this. First — don't panic, and don't try to drive the car. A vehicle without a programmed key won't start, but the doors will still open and close. The car isn't going anywhere.

Third — have your V5C logbook and a photo ID to hand when we arrive. We need them to prove ownership before we can programme a new key. Without them, we'd be making a key for any Tom, Dick, or Harry who could call us, and that's not how we work.
