Derwent Villages
Twin Villages on the River
East Ayton and West Ayton are separated by the River Derwent but connected by a shared history. East Ayton is the larger of the two — with the primary school, the church, and the pub that serves both villages. West Ayton is quieter, with Hutton Buscel just up the hill and the Forge Valley stretching inland towards Hackness.
These villages sit right on the A170 corridor — the main route from Scarborough to Pickering — and we pass through them regularly. We get calls for lockouts at the Forge Valley Woods car park, key replacements for residents who've been quoted dealer prices, and the usual run of lost keys and dead fobs that come with any community this size.

A Bit About the Ayton Villages
East and West Ayton sit either side of the River Derwent where the valley opens out before climbing into the Wolds. The river is the star here — it runs through the Forge Valley, a wooded ravine that's one of the most beautiful spots in the area, especially in autumn when the leaves turn gold. The old forge itself gave the valley its name and helped make these villages self-sufficient long before the car made Scarborough an easy commute.
Today Ayton is a popular place to live — close enough to Scarborough for work, far enough out to feel properly rural. The A170 runs right through East Ayton, which means we pass through these villages on almost every inland job. The Forge Valley Woods car park is a regular stop for us — walkers, dog owners, and photographers all make the same mistake of locking keys in the boot while pulling on wellies or setting up a tripod.
Story from the Road
The Photographer, the Dawn, and the Key on the Dashboard
It was 5:30am in October — still dark, the kind of pre-dawn chill that makes your fingers ache. A landscape photographer from Scarborough had driven out to the Forge Valley Woods to catch the sunrise mist rising off the River Derwent. He'd done it a dozen times before: park up, walk down to the riverbank, set up the tripod, wait for the light. This time, however, he'd left his car key on the dashboard while he rummaged in the boot for his lens bag — and a moment of distraction later, the boot was closed and the car had auto-locked.
He could see the key through the windscreen, sitting there on the dashboard like a prop in a cautionary tale. His phone was in his coat pocket, mercifully — he'd learned that lesson on a previous shoot. He called us, almost apologetic: "I know it's early, I know it's stupid, but I really need to catch this light."
We were on the road within two minutes — the van was still warm from the night before. The A170 was empty at that hour and we reached the Forge Valley car park in just over 15 minutes. The photographer was standing by his car, tripod already set up nearby — he'd decided to make the best of the waiting time and compose his shot while he could.
We had the car open in five minutes. He grabbed his gear, hurried down to the riverbank, and captured what he later described as the best mist shot of his career. He sent us a print — a stunning wide-angle view of the Derwent with autumn gold reflecting in the water. It hangs in our workshop to this day. Early mornings in the Forge Valley: worth getting up for, even when the job starts with a lockout.
