A Bit About Pickering
Pickering is the southern gateway to the North York Moors — a proper market town with a medieval castle, a steam railway, and a Monday market that fills the streets with stalls and visitors from across Ryedale. It's got that mix of agricultural heritage and tourism that defines inland North Yorkshire: tractors and campervans share the roads in equal measure.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs from Pickering up through the heart of the national park to Grosmont and Whitby — and on gala weekends the town hums with steam enthusiasts. The A170 connects it all, running east-west from Scarborough through to Thirsk, and it's our most-travelled inland route. We know the bends, the overtaking spots, and every village turn-off between here and the coast.
Story from the Road
Market Day Mayhem and the Missing Fiesta Key
Monday is market day in Pickering, and the main car park fills up before 10am. We got the call just after lunch — a woman from a village near Kirkbymoorside had driven in for the market, bought a week's worth of fruit and veg, loaded the boot, and then realised her ignition key wasn't in her handbag or any pocket. The key was somewhere between the cheese stall and the plant man — a needle in a haystack of market-day shoppers.
She'd retraced her steps three times. No luck. Her Ford Fiesta was sitting in the car park, locked, with the shopping in the boot and her mobile phone on the passenger seat. She'd borrowed a phone from the lady on the next stall to call us. Her husband was at work in Malton and had the spare — but he couldn't get away for hours.
We drove the A170 from Scarborough — clear run on a Monday afternoon — and reached her in just over half an hour. We opened the Fiesta without damage, retrieved her phone from the passenger seat, and then cut and programmed a new key right there in the car park. While we worked, a market trader brought over a cup of tea and told us about the time his own van key had snapped in the door lock.
By 2:30pm she was on the road home with a new key and a car full of shopping. She called us a week later — the original key had been handed in to the market office, found under a collapsed cardboard box near the egg stall. Now she has two keys and a story. Pickering market day — never dull.
