Why Mercedes Keys Are Different
Mercedes builds its security around a handshake between three modules: the key itself, the EIS/EZS (the ignition's electronic lock), and the engine ECU. All three have to agree before the car will even turn over. That's why you can't just cut a Mercedes key at a high-street kiosk — the new key has to be programmed into the car's security module, which takes manufacturer-grade diagnostic kit.
I carry that kit, mobile, in the van. No recovery truck to get the car to a Mercedes main dealer, no waiting a week for a key to arrive from Germany, no paying the dealer's premium. Most Mercedes key jobs are done the same day, at your car — and because I programme the key to the car rather than cloning a copy, the car's security stays intact.

The Courier's 6am Sprinter Key
The job I see most often on a Mercedes isn't a luxury saloon — it's a self-employed courier's Sprinter with the only key lost at 6am, just as the day's rounds are supposed to start. For an independent driver, a van that won't start isn't an inconvenience, it's a day's income gone. The Mercedes main dealer wants the van recovered and can't promise a same-day key.
I can usually be there within the hour, read the van's immobiliser, cut and programme a fresh key, and have the driver loaded and out on the rounds before breakfast. Because I programme the key to the van rather than cloning a copy, the security module accepts it as a genuine key — the old lost key (if it ever turns up) can be deleted so it no longer starts the van.
