How the Job Went

The owner rang us mid-morning from a quiet Scarborough residential street. They'd been out the previous evening, come home, locked the car, and didn't realise the only key had gone missing until the next morning when they went to drive to work. The Aygo was still on the drive, untouched, but without a working key it was a £6,000 paperweight that wouldn't start to get to a dealer.

The Aygo is a small, simple city car, but that doesn't make the key simple. Under the skin it's a Toyota — the same transponder-based immobiliser as a Yaris, just in a smaller package. The key has to be programmed to the car's immobiliser before the engine will fire, and a blade copied at a supermarket kiosk will unlock the door fine but won't start the car.

We carried the Toyota kit in the van. We pulled up, read the immobiliser through the OBD port, generated a brand-new transponder chip, cut a fresh blade, and paired the new remote. The owner was at work by lunchtime, with a spare key in their pocket so it couldn't happen again.

The Toyota Aygo — A City Car with a Proper Key

The Aygo is one of the most common city cars on Yorkshire roads — cheap to run, easy to park, and the kind of car people hang on to for years. It's built on a shared platform with the Citroen C1 and the Peugeot 108, all built in the same factory, but each carries its own brand's immobiliser and key. A Toyota Aygo key is a Toyota key, end to end.

That's worth knowing if you lose your only key, because it means you can't just grab a Peugeot or Citroen key off the shelf — it won't line up. The transponder has to be the Toyota one, and it has to be programmed to your specific Aygo. We keep the Aygo blanks and chips in the van, so there's no parts delay.

Why Driveway Jobs Beat a Dealer Visit

For a one-key Aygo, the dealer would want the car recovered to their workshop — a transporter across town, a day's wait while the key is ordered and programmed, and a bill at the end that starts at £240 and goes up. For a city car worth a few thousand pounds, that's a chunk of the car's value gone on one lost key.
