Hunmanby & the Wolds Edge

A Proper Village, Not Just a Stop on the Way

Hunmanby is one of the largest villages in North Yorkshire and has a character all its own. With its own shops, pubs, primary school, and even a railway station on the Yorkshire Coast line, it's a proper community — not just somewhere you pass through on the A165. The Hunmanby Gap gives access to a quiet stretch of beach that's one of the best-kept secrets on this coast.

We come out to Hunmanby regularly — lockouts at the station car park, key programming for residents who've been quoted dealer prices, and the occasional holidaymaker at a B&B who's lost their only key on the beach. It's a fast run down the A165 and we're usually there within 25 minutes.

A Bit About Hunmanby

Hunmanby sits at the point where the Yorkshire Wolds meet the coast — rolling chalk hills to the west, the North Sea to the east. It's a big village with a long history: a Saxon chieftain named Hundr gave it his name, the Normans built a manor here, and today it's a thriving community with its own railway station, a popular wedding venue at the hall, and a proper village centre that still has a butcher, a baker, and more than one pub.

The Hunmanby Gap is the real gem — a quiet stretch of beach that never gets the Filey or Scarborough crowds. For us, it means we get calls from dog walkers, fossil hunters, and the occasional campervan whose owner has locked the keys inside while changing into walking boots. The village itself generates steady work: elderly residents who need spare keys made, families with teenagers who've just passed their test and lost the first key within a week, and the railway station car park — a surprisingly reliable source of lockout calls.

Story from the Road

The Wedding, the Bentley, and the Best Man's Blunder

Hunmanby Hall is a popular wedding venue, and on a sunny Saturday in June it was hosting a big one. The groom's car — a borrowed Bentley from a family friend — was meant to be the getaway vehicle after the reception. The best man had the key, and after a few celebratory drinks had placed it carefully in the glovebox before locking the car. The problem? The Bentley had an old-school separate key for the glovebox, and he'd locked both inside.

The wedding party was inside doing speeches when the driver — a professional chauffeur who'd been booked for the evening — arrived and found the Bentley locked, key nowhere, and a very anxious best man pacing in the car park. The bride hadn't noticed yet, which was the only thing keeping the situation from becoming a full-blown crisis.

We got the call at 6pm and were up the A165 within minutes. We reached Hunmanby in just over 20 minutes — no traffic on a Saturday evening. The Bentley required a delicate touch — classic lock mechanism, nothing electronic — and we had the door open in under ten minutes without a scratch. The key was retrieved from the glovebox, the best man's dignity was partially restored, and the bride was none the wiser.

The chauffeur slipped us a tip and the best man promised to recommend us to everyone he knew. We drove back to Scarborough with the sun setting over the Wolds — one of those jobs that makes you smile. Hunmanby Hall: we've been back several times since.
