Jaguar XKR (1999) — All Keys Lost
in Brandesburton
This week's call-out was a 1999 Jaguar XKR in red — a proper gentleman's grand tourer. The owner had lost all keys to the car, with no spare anywhere. We came out to the driveway in Brandesburton, cut and programmed a brand-new key on site, and had the XKR back in action the same day.

How the Job Went
The call came in on a bright East Yorkshire morning. The customer had owned this red 1999 Jaguar XKR for several years — a proper, well-kept example of the original X100-generation supercharged grand tourer — but somewhere along the way, both keys had been misplaced. The original fob was long gone. The spare had vanished at some point in the previous year. The car had been sitting in the driveway for the best part of a week while the owner tried to find an answer that didn't involve a main dealer.
For most owners of a 25-year-old Jaguar, the options at this point are grim. A main dealer will quote £300+ for a replacement XKR key, take a week to order the part, and require the car on site — which would mean a recovery truck from Brandesburton to wherever the nearest Jaguar dealer is. A generalist locksmith will tell you they can't do it because the XKR uses an older Texas Crypto transponder that needs dealer-level kit. We do this kind of job every week.
We made the run down the A164 from Scarborough to Brandesburton with the mobile workshop — diagnostic kit, key blanks, transponder chips, fob shells, everything. The car was unlocked, so we could go straight to work. We read the XKR's immobiliser through the OBD port, generated a fresh Texas Crypto transponder, cut a new blade to the door and ignition locks, and programmed a new remote fob. Total time on the driveway: about 75 minutes.
The new key works exactly like the original. Unlock, lock, boot release, ignition, full immobiliser pairing — every function intact. The XKR fired up on the first turn of the new key, and the owner took it for a proper run down to Catfoss and back to make sure everything was working as it should. It was.
The 1999 Jaguar XKR — A Forgotten Classic
The X100-generation XKR is one of those cars that gets better with age. Built between 1996 and 2006, the supercharged XKR packed a 4.0-litre (later 4.2-litre) V8 with a Roots-type Eaton supercharger, putting out 370hp in the early cars and 400hp+ in the later facelifts. Top speed was limited to 155mph. 0–60 came up in under 5 seconds. For the late 1990s, this was genuinely supercar performance in a comfortable, leather-lined grand tourer body.
The early XKR is now old enough to be a modern classic but young enough to still be a daily driver. Values have started to rise. A clean, low-mileage example is becoming genuinely collectable. But that rising value creates a problem: replacement keys for these cars are more expensive than for a modern Jaguar, because the early immobiliser systems use older transponder technology that fewer locksmiths are equipped to handle. A main dealer will still charge £300+ and want the car for a week. We charge from £185 and come to you.
Why 1990s Jaguars Are a Specialism of Ours
Cars from this era — late 1990s and early 2000s — sit in an awkward middle ground for locksmiths. Modern auto locksmiths tend to be set up for the latest proximity smart keys and CAN-bus security. Old-school locksmiths handle the pre-immobiliser era. The X100 Jaguar, the Mercedes W202, the BMW E36/E39, the Range Rover P38 — they need someone with a foot in both camps.
Our mobile workshop is built for exactly this. We carry the older Texas Crypto and Philips PCF7930/PCF7931 transponder chips alongside the latest proximity smart key blanks. We can cut the older laser-cut and dimple-cut blades as well as the modern flip keys. We've done enough 1990s Jaguars, Mercedes, BMWs, and Range Rovers to know where the pitfalls are — and to know how to make a key for one in a driveway, in the open, in under 90 minutes.
All Keys Lost on a 25-Year-Old Jaguar — What to Do
If you've lost every key to a late-1990s or early-2000s Jaguar, the same principles apply as for any other all-keys-lost job. The car doesn't need to go anywhere. We don't need a spare to clone from. We read the immobiliser data from the car itself, generate a fresh transponder chip, cut a new blade, and programme a new remote — all at your location.
For an XKR like this one, the security system is the factory-fit alarm/immobiliser combined with a fuel-cut interlock. The new transponder talks to the immobiliser ECU through a coil around the ignition barrel; once paired, the car will only start with the new chip. The remote fob is paired to the central locking separately. We do both at the same time, in a single visit.
You'll need the V5C logbook and a photo ID to prove ownership. That's it. We do the rest on the drive.
