How the Job Went

The owner rang us mid-morning from a quiet Scarborough cul-de-sac. They'd been out walking the dog the previous evening, came home, locked the car, and didn't realise the only key had gone missing until the next morning when they went to drive to work. The A1 was still on the driveway, untouched, but without a working key it was a £15,000 paperweight.

An all-keys-lost Audi is a more involved job than most because of the VW Group's online component protection. The car will only accept a new key once the key has been authorised against the VW Group's servers — and that authorisation has to happen at the car, with the right diagnostic kit, by someone with the right access. A general handyman can't do it, a supermarket kiosk definitely can't do it, and even some locksmiths will send you to the dealer.

We carried the kit and the access in the van. We pulled up, read the A1's immobiliser through the OBD port, generated a brand-new transponder, cut a fresh blade, paired the new remote, and ran the online authorisation from the laptop. The owner was at work by lunchtime, with a spare key in their pocket so it couldn't happen again.

The A1 — Small Car, Big Security

The Audi A1 is the smallest Audi in the range — a city car, a first Audi, the kind of car that turns up on every supermarket car park in the country. But the keys are the same level of security as the A3, the A4, or the Q5. Megamos AES transponder, online component protection, no shortcut possible. The "small car, simple key" assumption is what catches people out when they try to get a cheap copy made at a supermarket kiosk.

We programme A1 keys all the time — for first-time owners who only ever had one key, for parents whose children have just passed their test and need a second key, for people who've moved house and the spare got lost in a box somewhere. The A1 is a common car for us, and a routine job.

Why Driveway Jobs Work Better Than Dealer Visits

For a one-key A1, the dealer would want the car recovered to their workshop — a transporter from your house to theirs, a few days' wait while the key arrives from Germany, and a bill at the end that starts at £320 and goes up. For a 2020+ A1, the dealer might also need the car for half a day while the online authorisation runs.
