How the Job Went

The owner had been driving the Swift for a couple of years. It was a reliable, honest car that started every morning — the sort of car that never asks for anything except fuel and an MOT once a year. The catch was the same as so many used cars: it arrived with one key, and the owner had been meaning to sort a spare ever since.

Unlike the BMWs and VWs we do, the Swift's immobiliser is a straightforward system — no component protection, no online authorisation against a server in Germany. That doesn't make it any less important to get right, though. We read the transponder chip from the original key, programmed a new chip to match, cut the blade to the door and ignition, and tested everything twice. The old key kept working, the new key worked, and the owner had a spare on the hook in the hallway before we'd packed the van up.

It's the sort of job that reminds you that not every key is a crisis — sometimes someone just wants to be sensible, and we're the people who make that easy.

The Swift has been one of Suzuki's best-selling cars in the UK for two decades. It's the car you see outside every school gate, every supermarket car park, and every sixth-form college from Scarborough to Sheffield.
